UMass Track And Field Teams Place Seventh At New England Championships

DURHAM. N.H. - This weekend, both the men's and women's track and field teams placed seventh at the New England Outdoor Championships. The top performance of the day came from red-shirted freshman Shiyi Zan (Ottawa, Ontario) who placed seventh in the 5K. With a time of 17:08.64, Zan now holds the fifth fastest time at UMass and qualified for the ECAC Championships next weekend. For the men, the top performance of the day came from the trio of sophomore Nicolai Naranjo (Essex Fells, N.J.), senior Nils Fischer (Stow, Mass.), and sophomore Jonathan Pierce (Hanover, Mass.). Naranjo took first place in the 5K with a time of 14:22.57, while Fischer took third place in 14:29.40. Pierce finished sixth with a time of 14:36.84. Together, the three scored half of the total points for UMass and all qualified for the IC4A Championships. In other women's events, senior Alisha Tatham (Brampton, Ontario) placed sixth in the 200 meter dash in 25.27 seconds, while sophomore Holly Heinricher (Foxboro, Mass.) placed eighth in 25.51 seconds. In the 5K, senior Christina DeRosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.) placed third with a time of 16:48.66. Sophomore Brittany Bakanowski (Northboro, Mass.) placed fourth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.78. In the 4x100 meter relay, the team of red-shirted junior Kristen Bakanowski (Northboro, Mass.), sophomore Ros Murphy (Beverly, Mass.), Heinricher, and Tatham placed second in 46.66 seconds. The team of senior Jen Curtain (Medford, N.Y.), freshman Gina Perno (Plainview, N.Y.), sophomore Nicole Serapiglia (Northboro, Mass.) and freshman Liz Fisk (Seekonk, Mass.) took eighth place in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 9:33.12.
In field events, Kristen Bakanowski placed sixth in the pole vault competition with a height of 10 feet, 11.75 inches. Sophomore Molly Chapin (Northfield, Mass.) placed eighth with a height of 10 feet, 6 inches, while freshman Jenelle Denehy (Whatley, Mass.) placed tenth with a height of 10 feet. In the triple jump, freshman Stephanie Aguguo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) took fifth place with a distance of 36 feet, ¾ inches. Sophomore Lisa Wilson (Holden, Mass.) placed second in the discus with a throw of 150 feet, 3 inches and placed tenth in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, ½ inch. In the javelin competition, freshman Kristina Landau (Millis, Mass.) placed fourth with a throw of 122 feet, 8 inches and senior Britt Canfield (Southwick, Mass.) placed eighth with a throw of 117 feet, 6 inches. In other men's events, senior Nathan Barksdale (Valparaiso, Indiana) placed seventh in the 100 meter dash in 11.69 seconds. Sophomore Andrew Mulvaney (South Hadley, Mass.) placed 12th in the 10K with a time of 31:43.20. In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, freshman Sean Duncan (Gardner, Mass.) placed fourth with a time of 9:26.39. In the 4x100 meter relay, the team of Barksdale, sophomore Brian Miller (Foxboro, Mass.), sophomore Samuel Laorenza (North Andover, Mass.), and sophomore Tyler Cotto (Holliston, Mass.) placed fourth in 42.94 seconds. The team of Barksdale, Laorenza, freshman Matt Gulino (Attleboro, Mass.), and freshman Michael Perrotta (Woodmere, N.Y.) placed seventh in the 4x400 meter with a time of 3:18.61. In the 4x800 meter relay, the team of senior Ryan Durkin (Andover, Mass.), sophomore Ryan Diorio (Bridgewater, N.J.), senior James Bentley (Cotuit, Mass.), and freshman Scott VanderMolen (Tully, N,Y.) took fourth place with a time of 7:45.58. In the decathlon, freshman Chris Dzidek (Chicopee, Mass.) placed ninth overall with a total of 5,316 points. Dzidek took third place in the 110 meter hurdles, high jump, and pole vault competitions. Next weekend, both teams will head to Princeton, New Jersey where the men will compete in the IC4A Championships and the women will compete in the ECAC Championships. |
