Men's Track & Field Finishes Sixth At Brown Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior James Godinho (Sandwich, Mass.) won the 400 meter dash and senior Mike Carr (Rehoboth, Mass.) won the javelin throw to pace the University of Massachusetts men's track and field team to a sixth-place finish among 11 teams at this past weekend's Brown Invitational.
Godinho clocked a 49 second flat quarter-mile to take the victory, while Carr recorded a personal-best mark of 209 feet in the javelin.
Senior Jon Korhonen (Gardner, Mass.) was narrowly edged out in the mile run taking a second place finish in 4:10.47.
Nine other Minutemen recorded top 10 finishes on the day.
Senior Joe McCormack (Wrentham, Mass.) took eighth in the 100 meters (12.46 seconds), while freshman Nathan Barksdale (Valparaiso, Ind.) finished 10th in the 200 meters (22.63 seconds).
Sophomore Wes Jones (Marblehead, Mass.) and senior Andy McCarron (Lunenberg, Mass.) led the distance corps taking seventh in the 800 meters (1:56.07) and sixth in the 5,000 meters (15:09.89).
Senior Henry Smith (Ellington, Conn.) posted two top 10 finishes to lead the field athletes. He took third in the triple jump (46'4.75") and 10th in the long jump (20'9").
Junior Corey Draffen (New Bedford, Mass.) finished ninth in the high jump, while freshman Tyler Gasper (Bellingham, Mass.) rounded out the top UMass performances with a fourth-place finish in the javelin.
Select members of the men's and women's track and field teams will compete in the Holy Cross Decathlon held April 20-21 in Worcester, Mass. Both teams will next compete at the UConn Invitational on Saturday, April 23.
