PRINCETON, N.J. - The UMass men's track and field team wasted no time getting into action on day one of the Larry Ellis Invitational being held in Princeton, N.J. The Minutemen added an additional three IC4A qualifiers and five New England Championship qualifiers. In a very strong field, the Minutemen proved for a solid showing on day one, following a late start on Friday afternoon.

Leading the way for UMass was the senior sensational duo of Andrew McCann and Nicolai Naranjo. The two qualified for both the New England and IC4A Championships in the 5,000 meter run with times of 14:34.03 and 14:34.13. Not only were the duo separated by a mere 0:00.10, but also finished consecutively in 20th and 21st overall. This is the second IC4A event for Naranjo, as he has already reached the qualifying standard in the 10,000 meter run as well.

Daniel Barry has been biting at the bit of a qualifying mark, as he finally reached one for both the IC4A and New England meets. In the 1500 meter run, Barry placed a solid 19th overall in 3:50.78. In the 5K as well, Jonathan Pierce qualified for the New England Championships, continuing his super senior season. Crossing the line in 13:39.72, Pierce has now qualified for two New England Championship events, and one IC4A event.

Not failing to impress were the 3,000 meter steeple chase team of Sean Duncan and Sonny Gamble. Both have already qualified for the New England Championships, but improved upon those qualifying marks by setting times of 9:19.73 and 9:19.89 respectively. The duo placed 16th and 17th to represent UMass in the event.

The Minutemen will be back in action on Saturday as the Larry Ellis Invite will conclude. The start time for the latter of the two day event is slated for 12 pm.
