SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - On Saturday April 6, in Springfield, Mass., the Minutemen finished second place overall in an AIC Invitational consisting of 20 teams. Once again it was the team's performance on the track that carried the Minutemen to their runner-up effort to Vermont.

Stephen Bigelow kicked off his final outdoor season with the program's fifth best time in its history. The Winchester, Mass., native completed the 110 meter hurdles in just 14.54-seconds which stood as the best time of the meet. Sophomore teammate Zack Grube finished fifth in the event with a time of 15.24-seconds.

Grube then went on to place fifth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 57.88-seconds. The victor of the event was UMass' own Peter Farlow with a time of 54.56-seconds.

Also finding success in short distance events was Josh Arons and Zack Hildenbrandt. Arons completed the 100 meter dash in just 11.04-seconds while it took Hildenbrandt just 49.54-seconds to finish the 400 meter dash. Arons' time was good enough for third in the meet and Hildenbrandt's time placed him second in his event.

In the mid and long distance events Stephen Ness was UMass' representative in the 800 meter run with a seventh place finish and a time of 1-minute, 57.41-seconds. In the 5,000 meter run Blake Croteau and John Mantia turned in a fourth and sixth place finish respectively. Croteau completed the event in 15-minutes, 26.60-seconds while Mantia finished in 15-minutes, 47.18-seconds.

The team put together a quad fast enough for the second fastest time of the meet in the 4x100 meter dash. The 4x100 team finished in just 42.93-seconds.

In the field Greg Copeland and Brett Davies each scored for the Minutemen. Copeland set a height of 13-feet, 1.5-inches in the pole vault, tying him for sixth place.

Davies threw for two scoring performances on the day, one in the discus and the other in the shot put. The freshman's toss of 135-feet, 9-inches in the discus placed him third in the event. He then threw 44-feet, 4.25-inches in the shot put for a seventh place effort.

The Minutemen are back in action next Saturday, April 12 at 11:30 AM at the UMass Track and Field Complex. The meet is the team's first time competing from the comforts of Amherst, Mass., and also marks senior day for the class of 2014.
