Koncki Claims NE Title, Minutemen Sit 2nd After Day One

BOSTON, Mass. - Sophomore Zachary Koncki paved the path to a second place team standing following day one of the New England Championships on Friday. The Minutemen currently have posted 21 points as a squad and trail first place UConn by only 3.50 points. The conclusion of the Championship meet will take place on Saturday with the majority of the finals being held in the various events.
Adding another title to his belt on Friday was Koncki, as the sophomore was crowned a New England Champion in the men's long jump. The sophomore jumped a career best 23-6.25, which bumps him up to third best all time in UMass history. Koncki has now a 2011 A-10 Title along with a New England Crown.
The heavily touted distance medley relay squad was also in action Friday, as the team of Joe Doyle, Scott VanderMolen, Sean Duncan, and Aaron Araujo placed third in the event with a team season best time of 9:57.93. The quad will also compete at next weekend's IC4A Championships.
Some notable Minutemen in the preliminaries were Tyler Cotto in the 60 meter hurdles, Quinn Ryder in the 60 meter dash, and Paul Grafov in the 500 meter dash. The senior, Cotto, placed second in 8.15 and will defend his New England Crown on Saturday in the finals. Ryder crossed the line at 7.14, placing 13th while Grafov grabbed ninth in 1:04.90. Both will compete in Saturday's finals in their respective events.
Twin brothers Ted and Chris Greene will also be in action Saturday in the finals of the 200 and 400 meter dashes.
Day two action begins at 10 am on Saturday with the men's heptathlon 60 meter hurdles, and concludes with the men's 4x400 meter relay. End time is approximated at 4:30 pm.
