Men's Track & Field Takes Fifth, Women Take Sixth At Atlantic 10 Championships

KINGSTON, R.I. - Senior John Jacobson (Taunton, Mass.) won the 800 meters and freshman Kristen Bakanowski (Northboro, Mass.) won the pole vault as the men's and women's track and field teams finished fifth and sixth, respectively, at the Atlantic 10 Championships held at the University of Rhode Island on Saturday.
Rhode Island won the meet with 200 total points, followed by La Salle (143), Saint Joseph's (94) and Fordham (94). The Minutemen narrowly missed the tie for third-place with 93 points on the day.
The Rhode Island women also took home the team title with 132.83 points followed by La Salle (127) and Richmond (109). Massachusetts recorded 58.50 total points for the day.
Jacobson won the 800 meters with his time of 1:56.11 - a season-best performance.
Bakanowski won her first Atlantic 10 Championship pole vault with her height of 11-feet, 3.75 inches - the fourth time this season she has won a pole vault competition.
Along with Jacobson and Bakanowski, the men's 4x800 meter relay team brought home a first-place finish as the Minutemen won in 7:53.57.
Senior Joe McCormack (Wrentham, Mass.) finished second in the 55 meter dash (6.44 seconds) qualifying him for the IC4A Championship meet and earning him second-team all-conference honors. Along with McCormack, seniro Jon Korhonen (Gardner, Mass.) finished second in the mile (4:14.15) to also pick up second-team all-conference accolades.
In his first A-10 Championship meet, freshman Sean Calicchio (Brooklyn, N.Y.) brought home second-place in the shot put with an IC4A Championship-qualifying and season-best mark of 51-feet, 6.50 inches.
In women's action, Elisabeth Budd (Springfield, Mass.) earned second-team all-conference honors as she finished second in the 500 meters (1:16.51).
Christina Huff (Springfield, Mass.) and Marissa Callahan (Bangkok, Thailand) each took home third-place finishes in the 55-meter dash (7.19 seconds) and the triple jump (36-5.50). Huff's performance in the 55 meters qualifies her for the ECAC Championships to be held in March.
