Track & Field Teams Have Stellar Performances At Boston University
Feb. 13, 2005
BOSTON - Freshman Kristen Bakanowski (Northboro, Mass.) again tied the UMass pole vault record of 12-feet even as the women's track and field team competed at the Boston University Valentine Invitational. The men's track and field team saw junior James Godinho (Sandwich, Mass.) and senior Jon Korhonen (Gardner, Mass.) as well as the 4x400 meter and 4x800 meter relay teams qualify for the IC4A Championships.
Godinho (Sandwich, Mass.) qualified for the IC4A Championships with a second-place finish in the 500 meters (1:03.31) clocking a personal-best time.
Korhonen also qualified for the IC4A Championships with his personal-best performance in the mile run (4:08.50) which was good for a 10th-place finish.
The Minutemen 4x400 meter relay and 4x800 meter relay teams also qualified for the IC4A's running their top times of the season. The 4x800 relay squad won the event in 7:45.55 - just over 30 seconds faster than the previous top time of the season - while the 4x400 team finished 12th overall in 3:18.64.
Rounding out the individual events, senior Henry Smith (Ellington, Conn.) took eighth in the triple jump with his season-best leap of the season at 45-feet, 10.75 inches, while freshman Ryan Logan (Leominster, Mass.) took eighth in the shot put with his mark of 49-feet, 11.25 inches. Freshman Sean Calicchio (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished 10th in the shot put with his toss of 48-feet, 8.25 inches.
In women's action, Bakanowski took second in the pole vault as Saki Sugano of Boston College took first. Sugano, who also recorded a mark of 12-feet even, won the event by clearing the height in fewer attempts.
This is the second time this season Bakanowski has hit the school-record mark. Ironically enough, it was back in Boston on Jan. 18 where she first cleared the height to win her second collegiate competition and earn Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week and ECAC Field Athlete of the Week honors. To date, she has three first-place and two second-place finishes in her early career.
Senior Christina Huff (Springfield, Mass.) was the only other Minutewoman to finish in the top-10 as she took 10th in the 55-meters (7.33 seconds). Huff also finished third in her section in the 200 meters (25.48 seconds) - her fastest time in the event this season.
Senior Rebecca Rufo (Wilmington, Mass.) and sophomore Katelyn O'Toole (North Andover, Mass.) each posted season-best marks in the high jump as they cleared 5-feet, 2.25 inches to finish in a 15th-place tie.
Both teams will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 19 when they compete in the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships held in Kingston, R.I.
