KINGSTON, R.I. - Led by seniors Joe McCormack (Wrentham, Mass.) and John Korhonen (Gardner, Mass.) who qualified for the IC4A Championships, the University of Massachusetts men's track and field team finished fourth among 10 teams on Saturday at the Rhode Island Mega Meet. Senior Christina Huff (Springfield, Mass.) led the women's squad with her ECAC-qualifying performance in the 55-meter dash as the Minutewomen finished fourth among eight teams at the Rhode Island Invitational.

The University of Rhode Island won both meets. In the men's Mega Meet, URI took first with 214 points, followed by SCSU (131), UNH (102) and UMass (82). In the women's Invitational, the Rams won the team title (161.5 points), followed by Brown (159.20), UNH (133) and UMass (98.90).

McCormack and Korhonen each qualified for the IC4A Championship meet with first-place finishes in the 55-meter dash and the 3,000 meters, respectively. McCormack posted his top time of the season sprinting to a 6.46 second finish, while Korhonen used a personal-best time of 8:24.06 for his qualifying mark. Earlier in January, Korhonen qualified for the IC4A meet in the 1,500 meters as well.

Huff qualified for the ECAC Championships with a first-place finish in the 55-meters (7.24 seconds) - her season-best performance to date. She also took fourth in the 200-meter dash (26.29 seconds) to finish the meet with 15 of UMass' 98.90 points.

In other men's action, freshman Sean Calicchio (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished fourth in the shot put with his first collegiate mark of 50-feet even. That is the top distance on the team this season. URI senior Andre Reid won the event with his mark of just over 57 feet and was the only A-10 competitor to finish higher than Calicchio.

The Minutemen received solid performances in the 800 meters and the mile run.

Freshman Nils Fischer finished fourth in the mile (4:22.95), followed by junior Paul Noone (Worcester, Mass.) who took fifth (4:23.86) - both times were season-best performances.

In the 800 meters, senior John Jacobson (Taunton, Mass.) finished third (1:57.24) and senior Matt Clark (Worcester, Mass.) captured fifth (1:57.76) as they recorded season-best times as well.

Rounding out the women's action, freshman Christina DeRosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.) led a strong contingent of 3,000-meter runners. Derosa won the event and UMass captured third, fourth and fifth place as well gaining 25 points in the event.

For Derosa, UMass' top cross country runner in the fall, this was her first indoor track win as her time of 10:25.12 was nearly 23 seconds faster than second place. Senior Amanda Dahlberg (Gardner, Mass.) took third (10:51.51) followed by freshman Amanda Bodette (East Middlebury, Vt.) and sophomore Cuisle Kierans (Newbury, Mass.). Bodette and Kierans ran 11:05.66 and 11:08.68, respectively, in the event.

Freshman Kristen Bakanowski (Northboro, Mass.) took a tough second place in the pole vault with her ECAC qualifying mark of 11-feet, 9.75 inches. Earlier in January, she qualified for the championship meet with a school-record tying 12-foot even mark.

Bakanowski fell on attempts to Jenna Russ of Brown who won the event with the same height.

In the 400-meter dash, junior Elisabeth Budd (Springfield, Mass.) took second with a 58.96 second effort to round out the top performers for the Minutewomen.

The women will return to action this weekend as they compete on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 11-12) at the Boston University Valentine Invitational. The men will compete on Saturday at the Boston University FasTrack Invitational.
