Men Take Third While Women Take Fifth at Reebok Boston Indoor Games

BOSTON, Mass. - On Friday, both track and field teams traveled to Boston to take part in the Reebok Boston Indoor Games held at the Reggie Lewis Center. The men's team placed third out of eleven teams, while the women placed fifth out of thirteen teams. The top performance of the day came from red-shirted senior Danielle Bolt (Mattapan, Mass.). Her first place time of 7.16 seconds in the 55 meter dash became the third fastest time at UMass and qualified her for the New England Championships and the ECAC. Bolt also qualified for the New England Championships with her fourth place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.07 seconds. For the men, sophomore Tyler Cotto (Holliston, Mass.) qualified for the New England Championships with his second place finish in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 7.73 seconds. The other top performance of the day for the men came from sophomore Jonathan Pierce (Hanover, Mass.) who took first place in the 5000 meter run with a time of 15:09.66.

In other men's events, freshman Darius Velez placed seventh in the 55 meter dash in 6.65 seconds. In the 200 meter dash, sophomore Ian Hackney (Stratford, Conn.) placed fifth in 22.76 seconds, while senior while Nathan Barksdale (Valparaiso, Indiana) placed seventh with a time of 22.87 seconds. Sophomore Samuel Laorenza (North Andover, Mass.) placed fourth in the 400 meter dash in 50.66 seconds, while sophomore Andrew O'Donnell (Plymouth, Mass.) was right behind in fifth place with a time of 50.74 seconds. Freshman Matthew Gulino (Attleboro, Mass.) placed seventh in 50.99 seconds. In the 500 meter dash, freshman Daniel Schwartz (Sudbury, Mass.) placed sixth with a time of 1:07.27.
 

 

In the one mile run, freshman Kris Carle (Jackson, N.J.) placed seventh in 4:21.52 and senior Matt Klypka (Oakland, N.J.) took eighth place in 4:22.15. Sophomore Ryan Diorio (Bridgewater, N.J.) finished fourth in the 800 meter run in 1:57.35 and senior Ryan Durkin (Andover, Mass.) placed tenth with a time of 1:59.40. In the 1000 meter run, junior Josh Boone (Gardner, Mass.) took second place in 2:31.40, while freshman Scott VanderMolen (Tully, N.Y.) placed third in 2:32.57. Sophomore Andrew McCann (Fayetteville, N.Y.) placed seventh in the 5000 meter run with a time of 15:43.28.

In the 4x400 meter relay, the team of Barksdale, Hackney, O'Donnell, and Laorenza placed fourth with a time of 3:25.71. The team of Boone, Hackney, Durkin, and Klypka took fifth place in the distance medley with a time of 10:38.98.

In field events, sophomore Brian Miller (Foxboro, Mass.) took third place in the high jump competition with a height of six feet, two inches. Miller also placed third in the long jump competition with a distance of 21 feet, 6.75 inches. Freshman Sean Busch (Stow, Mass.) placed eighth in the pole vault with a height of 13 feet, 3.5 inches.

In other women's events, sophomore Holly Heinricher (Foxboro, Mass.) placed fifth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.08 seconds to qualify her for the New England Championships. Sophomore Alexandra Haller (Marblehead, Mass.) placed eighth in the 55 meter hurdles in 8.93 seconds, while freshman Jaclyn Imhoff (Milton, Mass.) placed eighth with a time of 9.34 seconds.

In the one mile run, senior Christina DeRosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.) placed tenth in 5:08.69, while red-shirted freshman Shiyi Zan (Ottawa, Ontario) was right behind in eleventh place with a time of 5:10.11. Freshman Gina Perno (Plainview, N.Y.) placed seventh in the 1000 meter run with a time of 2:59.35 which qualifies her for the New England Championships.

In the 4x400 meter relay, the team of sophomore Brittany Bakanowski (Northboro, Mass.), freshman Stephanie Aguguo (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Imhoff, and Heinricher placed ninth with a time of 4:07.30. In the distance medley, the team of Zan, red-shirted senior Kristen Bakanowski (Northboro, Mass.), Perno, and DeRosa placed third with a time of 12:29.49.

In field events, Kristen Bakanowski placed fifth in the pole vault competition with a height of 11 feet, 3.75 inches, while Stephanie Aguguo placed fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 34 feet, 10.25 inches.

Overall, Rhode Island placed first for the men, while Boston College took first place for the women. Next weekend, both teams will travel to Kingston, Rhode Island to take part in the URI Invitational.
