Men's Track and Field Sharp In Season Debut

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Nick Otis finishing second in the 800 meter run with a personal best time of 1:56.40 was a thrilling moment for the team on Saturday afternoon's season opener. Otis missed all of the 2012 season due to injury and now proven healthy, the senior will give his team a boost on the track. The local out of Williamsburg, Mass. just missed qualifying for the New England Championships by .40 seconds.
Quinn Ryder qualified for the NECs in the 60 meter dash and set a personal best of 7.00 while placing third in the event. Also qualifying for the New England Championships was Stephen Bigelow when he ran the 60 meter hurdles in 8.51 in the preliminaries.
Finishing third in the 400 meter dash was Paul Grafov. The standout senior crossed the finish line at 50.52. Also getting the job done on the track was the men's 4x400 squad. The quad placed fourth in the event, finishing at 3:23.81.
In the pole vault the Minutemen's youth performed well, tying eachother for third place. Both Gregory Copeland and Michael Cyphers set a height of 14-3.25 in their 2013 debut.
UMass grabbed a couple of quality performances in the field with AJ Grube landing himself a pair of fifth place finishes. Grube leaped a mark of 42-9.75 in the triple jump and a height of 6-2.25. Peter Farlow's distance of 21-5.25 finished seventh in the long jump. Also leaving the season opener with a seventh place finish was sophomore, Brendan Cavallaro who threw 44-8.75 in the shot put.
Next week the Minutemen will compete in the URI Heptathlon which will run on Thursday and Friday, January 17 and 18. The Heptathlon precedes the Sorlein Invitational set for 12:30 p.m. Saturday, January 19.
