Minutemen Head Coach Russ Yarworth announced Wednesday that juniors Zack Priest (Cranston, R.I.), AJ Vozella (Weymouth Mass.), and John Weaver (East Longmeadow, Mass.) have been named swimming captains as well as RJ Rappe (Farmington, Minn.) to be the diving captain for the 2007-08 UMass season.
"These four seniors have meant so much to the program. They are dedicated student-athletes who are motivated to lead next year's squad and help us continue the UMass Swimming Championship tradition," said Yarworth.
These rising seniors have experienced great success throughout their careers. This past season, the Minutemen won their sixth Atlantic 10 title in the last seven years.
This year, Zack Priest broke his previous high in the 100-yard butterfly (50.06) and moved to third in the A-10 for the season with a second place finish at the A-10 Championships. He also swam as part of the first place finish in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:21.23.
AJ Vozella ranks eighth all-time at UMass in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.99 and 10th all-time in the 200-yard freestyle (1:41.51), both posted at the 2005 A-10 Championships.
John Weaver, named to the A-10 men's swimming and diving Academic All-Conference team this season, placed fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke and sixth in the 100-yard breast at the A-10 Championships.
Diving captain RJ Rappe set the UMass diving record on the three-meter board at the 2005 Atlantic 10 Championships with a dive worth 488.75 points as well as placing fifth in school history on the one-meter board. This season he placed second on the three-meter board (302.65) at the A-10's. His first place one-meter dive (worth a total of 631.50 points) set a new A-10 record. Rappe also placed seventh on the one-meter board at the NCAA Zone Regional Meet.
