Stoyle, Butler And Koppel Earn UMass Athlete Of The Week

Feb. 24, 2014

AMHERST, Mass. - Monday afternoon the UMass Sports Luncheon Committee announced that they will be honoring three athletes on Wednesday at this week's luncheon. Becky Stoyle, Michaela Butler and Josh Koppel all thrived in their respective Atlantic 10 Conference Championships this past week. UMass Football Head Coach Mark Whipple and Swimming and Diving Head Coaches Russ Yarworth and Bob Newcomb are this week's speakers.

Stoyle once again proved to be the best triple jumper in the Atlantic 10, claiming her second consecutive Indoor Atlantic 10 Championship and her third straight conference championship in the event. The junior fell just a half inch shy of the 42-foot milestone landing with a mark equaling 41-feet, 11.5-inches, bettering her own conference indoor record.

Stoyle also claimed the Mackal Field House facility record besting Elena Zhelezov's jump of 41-feet, 10.75-inches. Zhelezov hailed from Brandeis University and held the facility record since 1997.

In the closing ceremonies the Pembroke, Mass. native was voted the Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Field Performer after winning the triple jump and her silver medal performance in the pentathlon. Stoyle is the first Minutewoman to win the award since the honor was first given out in 2001.

The last UMass Women's Track and Field athlete to garner one of the conference's performance awards was Rosemarie Bryan in 2005 when she was named the Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Indoor Rookie Performer. The last Minutewoman to win an award that was not a freshman was Nicole Way back in 1999 when she was voted the Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Indoor Performer.

Stoyle is the first Minutewoman to win back-to-back indoor conference championships since Kristen Bakanowski won the pole vault in 2005 and 2006. She is also the first Minutewoman to win three conference championships in a row since Kristen Bakanowski won the indoor and outdoor 2005 A-10 Championship and went on to win the 2006 indoor championship.

Butler swept the 1- and 3-Meter Springboard titles at the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championships and was named the Women's Diving Performer of the Meet for the third-straight year. Her 1-Meter score of 315.65 and 3-Meter prelims score of 351.80 were both SPIRE Center pool records, while her 3-Meter prelims broke her own UMass school record. She has not lost a regular-season or A-10 diving competition in the last three years.

Koppel swept the 1- and 3-Meter Springboard titles at the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championships and was named the Men's Diving Performer of the Meet. His 1-Meter score of 303.75 was a career-high. He completed an undefeated regular-season and A-10 meet on both boards.

The buffet luncheon is held from noon to 1:15 p.m. with a cost of $13 per person. The program beginning at 12:15 p.m. will be held on the third floor in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center with free parking available at the rear of the building.

If the University of Massachusetts announces a delayed opening or closes for the day the UMass Sports Luncheon will be cancelled. You may check the UMass.edu website's notification or call the UMass Emergency Closing Hotline at 413-545-3630 for a voice recording indicating the status of the campus.
