Men's And Women's Swim Back In Action; Head To Kingston For Rhode Island Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams will see their first competition in over a month as they head to Kingston, R.I. for the Rhode Island Invitational. The two-day meet is scheduled to start 6:00 p.m. on Friday evening and resume all day Saturday. This will be the first time UMass has faced an Atlantic 10 opponent this season. Both teams are fresh off their annual winter training trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Minutemen In The Rankings
Last Year At The Rhode Island Invitational
Day one concluded with both the Minutemen and Minutewomen sitting in first place. The men had 209 points followed by La Salle, George Washington and URI; while the women had 166.5 followed closely by La Salle with 160.5, URI and George Washington.
Anna Cavanaugh and Molly Elkins had standout performances for the women. Cavanaugh took first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.05) and third in the 100-yard freestyle (54.17) and 500-yard free (5:08.87). Elkins took first in both the three and one meter dives with scores of 240.70 and 242.75, respectively.
Joey Sbordon and Derek Hursch paced the Minutemen picking up four first place finishes between the two of them. Sbordon finished first in both the 500-yard free (4:43.40) and the 400 IM (4:08.90) while Hursch finished first in the 200 IM (1:55.81) and the 200-yard free (1:42.94).
Coming Up Next
Both swim teams will be heading to Smithfield, R.I. on Friday Jan. 20 to take on the Bryant Bulldogs. Then the diving teams will be hosting a diving invitational on Sunday Jan. 22.
