AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts men's and women's swim teams fell to St. John's on Saturday in Jamaica, N.Y. The Red Storm beat the Minutemen, 156-101, while the St. John's women's team edged past UMass, 137-123. The men's team is now 2-1 on the season while the Minutewomen fall to 1-2.

In a closely contested battle, the Minutewomen were led by juniors Diana Alberti (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Christen Dexter (Centerville, Mass.). Alberti finished first in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly, recording times of 59.47 and 2:08.52, respectively.

Dexter placed first in two events for the Minutewomen, winning both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.42) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:26.19). Dexter and Alberti were both also members of the first-place 200-yard medley relay team. Teamed with junior Lauren Rowell (Hamburg, N.Y.) and senior Lizzy Boyle (Darien, Conn.), the Minutewomen posted a 1:50.77 finish in the event.

Rowell also placed first in the 100-yard backstroke for UMass, recording a time of 1:01.57. Another first-place finisher for UMass was freshman Aimee Bourassa (Ottawa, Ontario), who won the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.91).

Leading the way for the men's team was seniors Chad Arnold (Mohnton, Pa.) and Ryan Zaucha (Auburn, Calif.), along with junior Sean Collins (North Reading, Mass.). Arnold tallied two second-place finishes against St. John's in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, recording times of 21.83 and 47.87, respectively.

Collins earned second-place honors in the 100-yard breast (1:01.71) and was a member of the second-place 200-yard medley relay team. Teamed with seniors Darren Johnson (York, Maine) and Zaucha, along with sophomore Owen Scollan (Lowell, Mass.), Collins helped UMass record a 1:37.67 finish. Collins also finished third in the 200-yard breast (2:18.90), finishing right behind Zaucha, who placed second at 2:11.53.

 

 

Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams will return to action in two weeks when they compete at the Yale Invitational on Dec. 6-8.
