Michaela Butler Sets Two Records, Leads Divers At Frank Elm Invite

AMHERST, Mass. - While the swimmers were at the Terrier Invitational, the UMass men's and women's divers traveled to Rutgers University, to take part in the Frank Elm Invitational. The teams faced divers from Rutgers, Columbia, Boston University, Villanova, West Chester, Army, Drexel and the Coast Guard Academy. Michaela Butler shined once again, and remains unbeaten during the 2012-13 season.
The Minutewomen traveled all six of their divers and were once againe led by redshirt junior Michaela Butler. The Dennisport, Mass. native was able to take first in both the one- and three-meter diving events in impressive fashion. In the one-meter Butler set a UMass record with her preliminary score of 295.90, she would go on to score a 271.90 in the finals. She also knocked down the school record in the three-meter dive with an amazing score of 347.75 during prelims, 37 points higher than the previous record. She would go on to win the event with a finals score of 339.75.
Molly Elkins went on to finish fourth in the three-meter dive (258.40) and sixth in the one-meter (233.45). Rachel Dushman took seventh in both the one- and three-meter dives with scores of 231.10 and 225.00, respectively. Mary Atkinson took eighth in the one-meter (223.30), while Rhiannon Froman finished eighth in the three-meter (218.90).
On the men's boards Josh Koppel was able to take second in the three-meter dive with a score of 329.70 following up his 307.70 in the morning session. Alexander Merkulov finished fifth in the three-meter with a score of 298.05. He had a qualifying score of 310.40.
Koppel also went on to take fourth in the one-meter dive with a score of 270.35. Merkulov finished just outside the qualifying with a score of 215.95.
Both the men and women will rejoin their teams on December 1 as they each head their separate ways. The women will be travelling to take on Northeastern for a noon meet, while the men will play host to Yale starting at 1 p.m.
