AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams each fell to Brown University Saturday afternoon by a score of 172-126. Both teams had an all-around solid team effort despite losing to the Ivy League squad. The Minutemen and Minutewomen both had five first-place finishes on the afternoon.

Freshman Wiktor Karpinski picked up the first first-place finish for the men in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.04. Karpinski also took fourth in both the 200 frees and the 50 free. In the 50 he finished behind teammates John Conway, who finished second (21.07), and Peter Sacco, who took third (21.13).

Senior Eric Zeimetz took first in the 100-yard butterfly touching the wall with a time of 51.14. He also grabbed second in the 200 fly (1:55.97), finishing ahead of Hao Luong, who was able to take third with a time of 1:58.19. Luong was able to take a first-place finish of his own in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:53.17.

On the boards both Alexander Merkulov and Josh Koppel were able to finish first. In the one-meter Merkulov took the win with a score of 292.35, Koppel took second (277.95). In the three-meter dive Koppel finished first with a personal best 333.53, Merkulov took second.

For the Minutewomen Molly Smyth was able to pick up two first-place finishes in both the 1000-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke. In the 1000 free she finished with a time of 10:16.80, knocking down the record of 10:18.72 that she set earlier this year. In the 200 back she touched the wall with a time of 2:08.19.

 

 

Freshman Jocelyn Yuen picked up the other first-place finish in the pool in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.23. She was also able to pick up two other second-place finishes in both the 200-yard IM and the 200-yard butterfly, with times of 2:09.58 and 2:06.06, respectively.

On the diving board Michaela Butler took first in both the one- and three-meter diving events with scores of 293.25 and 285.15, respectively. Mary Atkinson took second in the one-meter, and Rachel Dushman took second in the three-meter.

Both teams will be back in action next weekend. The swimmers will be heading to the Terrier Invitational from Boston University starting next Friday, while the divers will be heading to the Galbraith Invitational from the campus of Rutgers, also starting on Friday.
