Durham, N.H.- The University of Massachusetts swimming and diving teams opened the 2001-02 season this afternoon with a split to the University of New Hampshire. The defending Atlantic 10 Champions had mixed results against the Wildcats as the Minutemen powered their way to a 217-77 victory and and Minutewomen dropped to UNH 125-175 for the first time in ten seasons.

Sophomore Peter Tawczynski (Holden, Mass.) led the Minutemen with three first-place finishes, winning the 100-yard breast (1:01.08), 200-yard breast (2:12.76) and 200-yard IM (2:01.34). Other multiple event winners were senior co-captain Tommy Keane (Melrose, Mass.) in the 1,000-yard free (10:28.49) and 500-yard free (5:00.20), senior Ryan Zaucha (Auburn, Calif.) in the 100-yard back (53.50) and 200-yard back (1:59.73), sophomore Conner Townsend (Memphis, Tenn.) in the 100-yard fly (53.26) and 200-yard fly (1:58.24) and junior Logan Alomar (Silver Springs, Md.) in the one-meter (235.20) and three-meter dives (273.47). Freshman Dylan Smith (Timmonim, Md.) and sophomore Sean Collins (North Reading, Mass.) also won events in the UMass effort, winning the 200-yard free (1:49.24) and 50-yard free (22.85), respectively.

The Minutemen were victorious in two relays as well, winning the 200-yard medley (Zaucha, Matt Woodward (Waterboro, Maine), Townsend, Owen Scollan (Lowell, Mass.)) in a time of 1:40.60 and the 400-yard free (Zaucha, Woodward, Scollan, Matt Woodfield (Naugatuck, Conn.)) in a time of 3:22.03.

For the Minutewomen, junior Kate Allery (South Hadley, Mass.) was a double-winner, placing first in both the one-meter (243.15) and three-meter dives (250.27). Senior co-captains Andrea Kazanjian (Troy, N.Y.) and Becky Hunnewell (Sandwich, Mass.) also captured first-place finished for the Minutewomen as Kazanjian won the 50-yard free (25.13) and Hunnewell won the 200-yard back (2:11.38) in the loss.



UMass returns to competition Nov. 3 with a 1:00 p.m. meet at Central Connecticut.
