Feb. 20, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's swimming and diving team closed out day one of the Atlantic 10 Championships sitting in third place, picking up a total of 60 points. The Minutemen sit behind both St. Bonaventure and Xavier, who picked up 80 and 68 points, respectively, through the first two events. Day two will begin at 10:30 a.m. with prelims from the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
The Minutemen kicked the night off with the 200-yard medley relay. The squad of Colin Mulcahy, Peter Sacco, Tim O'Neill and John Conway finished fourth, touching the wall at a time of 1:30.86. The relay team lowered their seedtime by two seconds and remained .68 seconds off the school record time. St. Bonaventure took gold in the event finishing at 1:30.00, with Xavier and Saint Louis rounding out the podium.
The second and final event for the UMass men on the evening was the 800-yard freestyle relay. The team of Troy Nichols, Brian Stiles, Eric Zeimetz and Chris Inglis finished with a time of 6:39.00, lowering their seedtime by 7.43 seconds, and taking fourth in the event. They finished just under four seconds off the school record of 6:35.11. St. Bonaventure was able to take gold again, this time in record setting fashion, with a time of 6:33.68.
Head Coach Russ Yarworth and the Minutemen now look ahead to day two which features the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM, 50-yard freestyle, the one-meter springboard and the 200-yard freestyle relay. UMass will look to use its depth to catch St. Bonaventure and move one-step closer to the top of that podium come weeks end.
