Houck, Allery Place First On Day 1 Of A-10's

BUFFALO, N.Y.-After the first day of the Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships, the men's team is in second place and the women's team is in fifth. The Minutemen, who tallied 233 points on the first day, trail the host school, St. Bonaventure (274 points). The Minutewomen recorded 124 points on the first day of the three-day meet. Richmond leads the women's competition with 273 points.
Leading the way for the Minutewomen was senior Kate Allery, who claimed the 11 dive 3-meter title with a school-record 468.60 points. Her score, which also qualified her for the NCAA 'B' cut, topped the previous UMass record of 465.05 set by Angelique Rodriguez in 1997.
Also performing well for the women's team was freshman Aimee Bourassa (Ottawa, Ontario) and sophomore Colleen Wasson (Harleysville, Pa.). Bourassa finished seventh in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:09.26 while Wasson placed eighth in the 200-yard IM at 2:09.74.
The men's team was led by senior Justin Houck's (Wyomissing, Pa.) first place finish in the 200-yard IM at 1:51.35. Senior Ryan Zaucha (Auburn, Calif.) finished right behind him in second place at 1:52.01.
The Minutemen also competed well in the 500-yard freestyle, claiming third, fifth and seventh place. Sophomore Dylan Smith (Timmonium, Md.) led UMass with a third place finish at 4:37.14, while senior Tommy Keane (Melrose, Mass.) finished fifth at 4:37.78 and Rob Bellamy (Columbia, Md.) placed seventh at 4:41.19.
Junior Logan Alomar (Silver Spring, Md.) placed third in the 1-meter dive with 236.30.
The men's team tallied two second place finishes in the relay events, placing second in both the 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay.
The second day of competition will be held in Buffalo, N.Y. on Friday, with prelims in the morning and finals starting at 6:30 p.m.
