Men's Swimming Holds Lead After Day Two, Women Tied For Fourth At A-10 Championships

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The University of Massachusetts and Richmond remain on top after night two of the 2005 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships. The Minutemen finished the night with a score of 274.5, while the Lady Spiders finished with 313 points.
The St. Bonaventure men finished in second place (224.5), La Salle in third (180), George Washington in fourth (145), followed by Fordham in fifth (135), Xavier in sixth (134), Rhode Island in seventh (19), and Duquesne in eighth (113).
In a hard-fought race to the end, UMass senior Justin Zeimetz (Rochester, N.H.) came out on top of the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.92. For Zeimetz, this was his fourth A-10 title of his two-year career as a Minuteman.
On the boards, freshman Reuben Rappe (Farmington, Minn.) of UMass claimed a gold medal in the one-meter diving competition with a score of 304.30. Rappe becomes the first UMass men's diver to win the A-10 title.
Sophomore Greg Chartier (Amherst, Mass.) earned second-team All-Atlantic 10 honors in the 200-yard individual medley finishing second in 1:53.15.
On the women's side, St. Bonaventure finished the night in second place (209), George Washington in third (179), the University of Massachusetts and Fordham ended the night tied for fourth (151), followed by Xavier in sixth (123), Duquesne in seventh (99), Rhode Island in eighth (92), and La Salle in ninth (65).
The Minutewomen received a third-place finish from the 200-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Nicole LeBarge (Lee, N.H.), senior Lynette Sweeney (Plymouth, Mass.), freshman Allison Volpe (Pottstown, Pa.), and junior Kelly Hoffrage (St. Charles, Ill.). The quartet completed the race in 1:36.43 which set a new UMass record.
LeBarge finished seventh in the 50-yard freestyle with a season-best performance of 21.26 seconds, while Hoffrage swam her best time in the 200-yard individual medley taking seventh in 2:09.08.
