SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Massachusetts men's and women's swimming teams won 21 of 28 events in sweeping Bryant on Saturday.

The men won 10 races en route to a 178-84 score and the women claimed 11 of 14 events for a 162-100 victory.

Freshman Heath Maginn was dominant in the backstroke, leading a top three UMass sweep in the 100 (with junior John Conway second and sophomore Wiktor Karpinski third) before an 8-plus second win in the 200.

UMass won both butterfly races with Karpinski claiming the 100 and junior Hao Luong in the 200. Both athletes were on the 200 medley really team that opened the meet with a victory.

Senior Troy Nichols led another UMass sweep in the 200 free with sophomores Alessandro Bomprezzi and Joe Woodman out-racing the field.

Junior John Conway already has a top-15 time in the 50 free in the Atlantic 10 and maintained that strong performance by touching first by two hundredths of a second to earn the team nine points. Seniors Matt Grippo and Jordan Guttrich finished third and fourth, respectively, as the top four swimmers were separated by less than a second.

Sophomore Brian Stiles won the 100 free and swam the anchor leg on the team's victorious 200 free relay group.

Freshman Nick Sundquist won the 500 free after a top five exhibition time in the 200 free.

Both teams will return to an invitational format this weekend when they participate in the Dartmouth Invitational. The event will be held at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center in White River Jct., Vt. Friday's action begins at 5:00 p.m. and Saturday's will start at 10:00 a.m.
