Swim Teams Compete In Rhode Island Invitational

SOUTH KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Massachusetts men's and women's swim teams participated in the Rhode Island Invitational Jan. 10-11, held in South Kingston, R.I. The men's team finished second winning five events, while the women won two events and finished fourth.
Junior Dylan Smith (Timonium, Md.) led the men's team, capturing first place in two events. He registered a time of 1:54.13 in the 200-yard butterfly and followed up with a mark of 52.16 to take the 100-yard fly event. Junior Justin Ziemetz (Rochester, N.H.) took first place in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking a 53.68, beating out freshman teammate Evan Swisher (N. Bennington, Vt.) by three-one hundreths of a second. Swisher then went on to win the 200-yard backstroke with a mark of 1:52.58. In the relays, the team of Zeimetz, junior Ryan Matthews (Rumson, N.J.), freshman Gordon Leonard (Cinnaminson, N.J.) and senior Sean Collins (N. Reading, Mass.) took the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:27.16.
For the women, senior Diana Alberti (Wantagh, N.Y.) was the only Minutewoman to take an individual event, as she swam a winning 200-yard butterfly time of 2:10.98. The other UMass victory came in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as the team of freshman Nicole LeBarge (Lee, N.H.), freshman Liz Lovejoy (Reading, Mass.), sophomore Kelly Hoffrage (St. Charles, Ill.) and sophomore Aimee Bourassa (Ottawa, Ontario) registered a winning mark of 1:42.03.
In the diving events, the Minutemen were dominant, sweeping the top two spots in both contests. Junior Brandon Doane (Danvers, Mass.) won both the one-meter and three-meter events, with scores of 261.70 and 256.65, respectively. Senior Logan Alomar (Silver Spring, Md.) took second in each event, diving to respective scores of 234.60 and 251.80. In the women's diving events, senior Joanna Walsh (Spencer, Mass.) led the way, Taking third in the three-meter dive with a score of 203.55, followed by a fourth-place finish in the one-meter dive with a mark of 207.40.
The UMass men's swimming and diving teams will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 18 as they travel to Southern Connecticut State for a dual meet, while the women have the weekend off. Both teams will then head to Boston College for a dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 24.
