Mark DeSantis, Becky Letourneau Named UMass/Dinn Bros. Co-Athletes Of The Week
Oct. 22, 2007
AMHERST, MASS. - Sophomore Mark DeSantis (Stoneham, Mass.) of the men's soccer team and senior Becky Letourneau (Greenfield, Mass.) of the field hockey team have been named the UMass/Dinn Bros. Co-Athletes of the Week after turning in key performances this past weekend. DeSantis scored the game-winning goal over No. 12 Saint Louis, while Letourneau earned a pair of shutout victories keeping the field hockey team tied for first in the A-10 standings.
DeSantis helped UMass to a 1-1-0 weekend with an upset win at No. 12 Saint Louis on Friday and a 1-0 loss at Charlotte on Sunday. DeSantis scored the game-winner at the Billikens. The goal was the third of his career and his second game-winner. The win over Saint Louis is one of the top victories in the history of UMass Soccer as SLU has won 10 national titles in program history. The win keeps UMass in a first-place tie in the Atlantic 10 and provides the Minutemen (8-5-0, 3-1-0 A-10) with the tie-breaker of SLU in the race for the league tournament.
Letourneau had two shutout victories in goal for the Minutewomen. On Friday, she made five saves in goal and made several clears out of the circle in a 1-0 win at Saint Louis. On Sunday, she made two saves, including a dramatic diving stop off a penalty corner with less than two minutes left to give UMass a 1-0 win over Richmond, their first victory over the Spiders since 2001. She now has six shutouts for the season - five of those in conference games. In that span, she has posted a 0.33 GAA and .905 save percentage. She has all of UMass' A-10 wins in leading them into a tie atop the conference standings at 5-1.
The UMass Sports Luncheon will be held this Wednesday from Noon to 1 p.m. in the Cape Cod Room of the Student Union.
