Schwartz & Sverrisdóttir Named UMass Athletes of The Week
Sept. 30, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - Josh Schwartz and Rebekka Sverrisdóttir have both been selected as Co-UMass Athletes of the Week on Monday after helping their respective soccer teams to victories last week. The pair will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon this Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Noon in Room 1009 of the Campus Center. Guest speakers at this week's luncheon include football head coach Charley Molnar and Voice of the Minutemen Josh Maurer.
Schwartz scored two goals, including the game-winner, and had two assists in the Minutemen's 5-2 win over Siena, leading the UMass men's squad to its first win of the year after an 0-8-1 start. His six-point day was a career-high and extended his season totals to a team-high four goals and two assists.
Sverrisdóttir played a key role in both of women's soccer's wins in a 2-0-0 week. The defender started both matches and helped lead UMass to a shutout over Bryant last Thursday as the back line limited Bryant to just one shot in the second half. Then on Sunday in the Minutewomen's Atlantic 10 opener, Sverrisdóttir scored her first collegiate goal to give UMass an early lead at Saint Joseph's and played all 90 minutes of UMass' third straight victory, a 2-1 triumph over the Hawks.
