Aug. 20, 2008
AMHERST, Mass. - UMass men's soccer keeper Zack Simmons (Durham, N.H.) has been named to the College Soccer News Preseason All-America Third Team as announced by the organization on Wednesday. This is the second time in his career that the redshirt senior has earned All-America status. Last season he was named to the NSCAA/adidas All-America Third Team after helping UMass reach the NCAA College Cup for the first time in school history.
Simmons had a break-out year in goal for the Minutemen in 2007 and gained national attention during the dramatic NCAA Tournament run. He enters 2008 after earning UMBRO/Soccer News Net National Player of the Year, NSCAA/Adidas All-America Third-Team, NSCAA/adidas Mid-Atlantic Region First Team, Soccer America MVP First Team, College Cup All-Tournament Team, ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District, A-10 Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Atlantic 10 Tournament MVP, Atlantic 10 Tournament Team, Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team, UMass Athlete of the Year, UMass Scholar Athlete of the Year, and UMass Fall Scholar-Athlete accolades.
He is already one of the top goalkeepers in program history and will have a chance to improve upon those totals. Entering the season, Simmons holds UMass records for career shutouts (23), wins as a goalie (32), and season goals against average (0.79). Last season, he ranked 12th nationally in save percentage and 31st in goals against average. For his career, Simmons has started in all 63 contests he has played in posting a 1.02 goals-against-average with a .821 save percentage.
The Minutemen defeated the University of Montreal on Aug. 19 as the first of two preseason exhibition games. UMass, ranking No. 13 in the NSCAA/adidas Preseason Poll, will host No. 11 Brown this Sunday, Aug. 24 at Rudd Field (1 PM).
Along with Simmons, UMass returns eight of 11 starters from 2007 and six of its top seven offensive players. Redshirt senior Chris Brown (Tucson, Ariz.), senior Mike DeSantis (Stoneham, Mass.), junior Bryan Hogan (Litiz, Pa.) and Simmons were each named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Team.
UMass will open the regular season at Holy Cross (Fri., Aug. 29) and will open its home schedule against Siena on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Rudd Field. The Minutemen were an amazing 9-1 at Rudd Field as part of the program-record 17-wins last season. A Rudd Field record 1,863 fans turned out for UMass' NCAA Third-Round game against Illinois-Chicago, while the 8,611 fans at SAS Soccer Park for the National Semifinal game against Ohio State was a UMass school record for attendance.
