Aug. 19, 2002
MONTREAL, Canada - Oral Bullen (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored two goals and an assist and Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) added a goal and an assist to lead the UMass men's soccer team to a 6-2 victory over the Metro League All-Stars in Montreal. It was the first game in a five-game preseason schedule in Canada.
The Minutemen started slow, before Yuri Morales (Santa Cruz, Calif.) found the back of the net on an assist by Deren to give UMass a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute. Deren then added a goal from Ptah Myers (Columbus, Ohio) and Derek Rhodes (DePere, Wis.) just three minutes later to push the lead to 2-0.
In the second half, Bullen scored his first goal of the game with an assist from Dan Colwell (Spencer, Mass.) in the 51st minute to give UMass a 3-0 cushion. The Metro League All-Stars scored on a penalty kick in the 55th minute to trim the lead to 3-1, but Gabe Bernard (Williamsburg, Mass.) stopped any rally with a netter in the 60th minute with an assist from Bullen. Freshman Ernie Billittier (Mundelein, Ill.) got in the action with a goal in the 72nd minute with an assist from Colwell. Bullen scored the final goal of the game for the Minutemen with an assist from Bernard in the 81st minute.
"We played pretty well," said Head Coach Sam Koch. "We played only one goalie, but everyone else saw action, and it was what we were looking for. We were happy with our first game."
The Minutemen will play four more games in four days, before returning home on Thursday.
