Melendez To Participate In Olympic Qualifier
July 21, 2003
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts men's soccer goalkeeper Lester Melendez (Miami, Fla.) will participate in the Olympic qualifiers in early September, aiming for a spot in the 2004 Olympics. Melendez is no stranger to international competition, as he played on the Under-23 Nicaraguan National Team for the last two years.
Melendez, a sophomore who was born in Chinandega, Nicaragua, is a member of the Nicaraguan National Team that will face Panama in a home-and-home series on Sept. 5-7. The winner of that bracket will face St. Lucia in an identical series, with the winner of that series to battle the United States team in the quarterfinal round of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
Melendez did not see any action for the Minutemen last fall, but is expected to push for time this season. He had a stellar prep career at Miami Coral Park H.S., where he was a four-year letterwinner and posted a 13-4-2 record with a GAA of 0.53 and 13 shutouts during his senior campaign.
The Minutemen open the regular season on Aug. 30 with a 7:00 p.m. game at Hartford.
