10 Home Games Highlight 2012 UMass Men's Soccer Schedule
July 5, 2012
AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's soccer team will host 10 home matches and will face six teams which made the NCAA Tournament last year as head coach Sam Koch announced the 2012 schedule on Thursday. Included in the six NCAA Tournament teams are an exhibition match at UConn, which made a run to last year's College Cup, and a regular-season match at Charlotte which played for the NCAA Championship in 2011.
UMass will begin the exhibition season with the game at UConn at 7 PM on August 12 followed by a home exhibition match against Providence on August 18 at 1 PM at Rudd Field.
The season officially opens on Friday, August 24 at Rudd Field against Delaware (1 PM) kicking off a three-game home stand to start the campaign. The Blue Hens and the Friars both reached the NCAA Tournament's 2nd Round in 2011 marking three straight tournament qualifiers to start the season.
The Minutemen will then host Vermont (Aug. 27) and Harvard (Aug. 31) to close out the season-opening home stand.
On Saturday, Sept. 1, UMass will host an exhibition match against the Alumni at Rudd Field before a week off in competition.
A four-game road swing starts on Saturday, Sept. 8 at Adelphi followed by matches at Hartford (Sept. 12), New Hampshire (Sept. 15) and Siena (Sept. 19).
Following a home match against Dartmouth (Sept. 22), the Minutemen will host Syracuse at Rudd Field on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 3:30 PM. This marks the first-ever meeting between UMass and the Orange on the pitch.
A mid-season road exhibition match against the University of Montreal will break up the non-conference and Atlantic 10 schedules for the Minutemen. UMass will head to Montreal on Sunday, Sept. 30 with the match slated for 1 PM.
Saturday, October 6 marks the start of A-10 play as UMass heads to perennial New England rival Rhode Island for a 7 PM kickoff. The 2012 match will mark the 57th all-time meeting between the two sides.
UMass will host four Atlantic 10 games during October with Saint Joseph's (Oct. 12), Temple (Oct. 14), St. Bonaventure (Oct. 26), and Duquesne (Oct. 28) all visiting Rudd Field. The Minutemen will alternated each home weekend with a road weekend with matches at Charlotte (Oct. 19), George Washington (Oct. 21), Dayton (Nov. 2) and Xavier (Nov. 4).
Both Xavier and Charlotte made the NCAA Tournament last year with the 49ers making the NCAA Championship Game before falling to North Carolina. Charlotte was the first A-10 Team since UMass in 2007 to make the NCAA College Cup.
The 2012 Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championship Tournament will be hosted by Charlotte on Nov. 8-11 at Transamerica Field in Charlotte, N.C. Xavier won the A-10 Tournament last season advancing to the league's title 4-3 on penalty kicks.
New this season for the A-10 Tournament will be the expansion of the field to eight teams from six teams as voted on earlier this summer by the Atlantic 10 Conference Council of Presidents. Also new to the Atlantic 10 this year is the addition of Butler and VCU putting the league at 16 teams for men's soccer.
UMass finished 12th last season in the A-10 standings with a 2-5-2 mark in league play and a 4-13-2 record overall. Rising junior Brett Canepa is the Minutemen's top returning scorer with three goals and an assist in 2011. The Minutemen lose four starters from last year including A-10 Second-Team All-Conference selection David Key on defense and goalkeeper Shane Curran-Hays.
