AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore Bryan Hogan (Lititz, Pa.) tallied his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 85th minute as the UMass men's soccer team defeated Atlantic 10 rival La Salle 2-1 on Friday morning at Rudd Field. Redshirt junior defender Chris Brown (Tucson, Ariz.) headed home his first goal of the season off a free kick in the first half as the Minutemen improved to 9-6-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the A-10. UMass led 2-0 until La Salle's Ryan Richter put the Explorers on the scoreboard with 47 seconds remaining in the game.

UMass and La Salle (5-9-1, 3-3-0 A-10) entered the game tied for sixth-place in the conference standings. The Minutemen will face Fordham on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. The Rams enter the weekend tied for second in the league and will face fourth-ranked Rhode Island on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

Brown put the Minutemen up 1-0 in the 11th minute of play as freshman Ben Arikian (West Islip, N.Y.) placed a cross off a free kick into the box near the left post. Brown was able to head the ball to the opposite side of the net beating La Salle keeper Andrew Bernhard.

The teams battled through the remainder of the first half without any further scoring although UMass did have several chances. Sophomore Mark DeSantis (Stoneham, Mass.) broke through the Explorer defense in the 16th minute and caught Bernhard out of position. His shot, however, was saved by a diving Ryan Tadley who chested the ball out of danger.

In the second half, Hogan took a pass from Prince Ofosu (Worcester, Mass.) and beat Bernhard to the right from the left post again.

Richter scored La Salle's lone goal at the 89:13 mark with a rocket shot from 30-yards out that beat UMass keeper Zack Simmons (Durham, N.Y.).

Simmons finished the game with two saves, while Bernhard made six.

UMass outshot the Explorers 15-to-9 and held a 5-to-0 advantage in corner kicks.
