AMHERST, Mass. - Duquesne scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of play en route to its third consecutive win as the Dukes defeated UMass 4-1 on Sunday at Rudd Field.

Travis MacKenzie opened the scoring taking a pass from Jason Sourbeer and heading it into the right side of the UMass goal for a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.

In the 10th minute, Andrew Bell tallied an unassisted goal bending a 15-yard shot into the right corner of the net for the quick 2-0 advantage.

UMass cut into the lead in the 23rd minute when freshman Mike Mingione (New Fairfield, Conn.) headed a high, curving cross from junior Oral Bullen (Brooklyn, N.Y.) into the left pocket making the score 2-1 Duquesne.

The Dukes answered in the 32nd minute as Brian Bartek headed home a service from Steve Mellor for his first goal of the season.

Neither team was able to score offensively in the second half until Mike Mehler's penalty kick found the back of the net following a UMass foul in the 81st minute.

The Minutemen's best scoring opportunity of the half was when sophomore Rob Charest (Monson, Mass.) came away from traffic with the ball inside the box firing a shot which bounced straight down off the cross bar and cleared away by the Duke defense.

Duquesne (12-6-0, 8-2-0 A-10) takes a one-game advantage over Dayton as the top team in the Atlantic 10. Massachusetts (8-8-2, 5-3-2 A-10) currently sits in fourth-place with the top-six teams making the league tournament.

Prior to the game, the Minutemen honored seniors Gabe Barnard and Colin Burns for their final home game.

The Minutemen return to action on Friday, Nov. 5 when UMass travels to Rhode Island for the final regular season game. The match is slated for a 7:00 p.m. kick-off. For complete updates on play-off standings, visit
