Men's Soccer Falls In Overtime To Richmond, 2-1
Oct. 29, 2011
AMHERST, Mass. - Justin Chew scored his first goal of the season 1:55 into overtime to give Richmond a 2-1 victory over UMass men's soccer on a cold Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field. Freshman Robert Sena netted his first collegiate goal in the 53rd minute to tie the game for the Minutemen. Houston Oldham had started the scoring for the Spiders with a goal in the 34th minute.
Early in the extra period, Chew dribbled the ball up the middle of the field and beat the defense to score his first goal of the season and give the Spiders the win.
UMass controlled much of the play throughout the second half, creating several scoring chances leading up to and following Sena's goal at 52:32.
The freshman took a nice crossing pass from the left off the foot of Chris Gilbert to tie the game, 1-1.
UMass outshot Richmond, 24-12, including a 14-3 shot advantage in the second half. The Minutemen earned seven corner kicks to UR's two.
Richmond took the lead in the first half when Oldham took a cross from the left and scored his second of the season, coming 33:53 into the game.
Each goalie, Shane Curran-Hays for UMass and Zac Brown for Richmond, made five saves on the day.
Saturday's game was played in near-freezing temperatures and just ahead of a snowstorm in the Northeast. The game was moved up from its originally scheduled Sunday at noon game time.
UMass hosts its regular season finale on Saturday, Nov. 5 when it hosts Rhode Island on Senior Day at Rudd Field.
