Men's Soccer Unbeaten Streak Reaches 10 Games
Oct. 27, 2002
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team ran its record to 11-4-1 overall with a 3-1 victory over Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon. The win, coupled with Rhode Island's loss to the Hawks on Friday night, propels the Minutemen into first place in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
UMass wasted no time in jumping out to an early lead. Senior defenseman Derek Rhodes (DePere, Wis.) tallied his second goal of the year with a 40-yard blast on a free kick. The goal came at the 15:37 mark.
The Minutemen added to the lead when Yuri Morales (Santa Cruz, Calif.) found the net with an assist from Ptah Myers (Columbus, Ohio) for his eighth goal of the season. The goal gave UMass a 2-0 lead at the 34:49 mark.
After Saint Joseph's narrowed the margin to 2-1 early in the second half, senior Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) tied the single-season goals scored mark with his 17th goal of the season at the 72:36 mark. The goal was assisted by Dan Colwell (Spencer, Mass.).
The Minutemen got a strong goalkeeping effort from senior Enzo Altomare (Dereby, Conn.). Altomare stopped six Saint Joseph's shots and allowed only the one goal.
UMass, which set a school record for longest unbeaten streak at 10 games, will continue its quest for an Atlantic 10 Conference title next weekend with a pair of games in the Washington, D.C. area. On Friday, the Minutemen battle George Washington at 2:00 p.m. and on Sunday, UMass battles Richmond at 1:00 p.m.
