Oct. 26, 2012
AMHERST, Mass. - Brad Vanino scored twice in under a minute to lift St. Bonaventure to a 4-1 victory over Massachusetts in men's soccer action at Rudd Field Friday.
With the Bonnies holding a 2-1 edge through the midway point of the second half, Vanino received a ball deep in the box from Daniel Iannacito and headed it past UMass goalkeeper Brian Frame at the 66:47 mark. Vanino recorded his sixth goal of the season just 48 seconds later when he found himself in the box following a Minuteman turnover as he shot it past Frame.
SBU (5-11, 3-3 Atlantic 10) took just eight shots but five were on goal. UMass (5-8-2, 2-4) outshot its counterparts with 14 boots but were only able to put one past Abel Bautista as he finished with five stops.
The Bonnies got on the board early in the contest, at 4:56, when James Reed got behind the Minutemen back line on a pass from Brad Beaumont and beat Frame in a 1-v-1 situation.
UMass responded eight minutes later when Dominic Skrajewski fed a ball up the field to Brett Canepa, who put a hard shot on goal from 25 yards out that went over Bautista and tucked just under the crossbar for his second score of the year.
SBU went up for good in the 36th minute on a goal by Iannacito that was assisted on by Andrew Derayeh.
