Men's Soccer Wins 3rd Straight; 1-0 At St. Joe's
Oct. 24, 2010
PHILADELPHIA - Junior forward Bryant Craft scored in the 81st minute giving the UMass men's soccer team a 1-0 win at Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon. The win keeps the Minutemen unbeaten in the Atlantic 10 at 4-0-1 having surrendered just one goal in that span. Keeper Chris Piekos made three saves to earn his fifth shutout of the season.
The win moves UMass into sole possession of second place in the Atlantic 10 just behind Charlotte which holds a 5-0-0 record in league play currently.
UMass midfielder Ben Arikian picked up his sixth assist on the year giving him sole possession of 4th all-time (23). He needs one more to move into a tie for third and five more to tie career leader Yuri Morales (28).
The goal was the team-best fifth of the season for Craft who also holds a team-best 12 points.
Overall, the Minutemen improve to 5-3-6 with the win, while Saint Joseph's falls to 2-11-0 (1-4-0 A-10).
After a scoreless first half, it looked as if the game would head into overtime as neither team could score until Craft's tally with just over nine minutes left in regulation. In the 84th minute, it looked as if Saint Joseph's had found the equalizer on a break-away, but an offsides call negated the apparent goal.
The Minutemen finished the game with a 19-to-12 shot advantage. Both teams earned two corner kicks.
Hawks' keeper Michael Moulton made 10 saves in the loss.
UMass will return to action next Friday, Oct. 29 against Fordham (2:30 PM) and Sunday, Oct. 31 against La Salle (1 PM) at Rudd Field. Sunday's match against the Explorers will be Senior Day for the Minutemen.
