UMass Scores Three Unanswered To Defeat Rhode Island, 3-1, For First League Victory
Oct. 20, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - Cody Sitton scored two of Massachusetts' three unanswered goals as the Minutemen defeated rival Rhode Island, 3-1, at Rudd Field on Sunday.
UMass (2-10-1, 1-2 Atlantic 10) earned it's first three points of league play to move into a tie for sixth place through two weekends of action.
The Minutemen outshot the Rams 17-12, including a 12-5 margin over the first 45 minutes. Junior Matt Keys led the team with five shots.
URI scored first in the 12th minute when Matt Sykes booted a ball from a hard angle on the left side of the box for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Just over 14 minutes later, Sitton tied it up at 1-1 when he found some open space after a URI turnover deep in it's own territory. His shot deflected off a Ram and into the net for his first career goal.
The Minutemen struck pay dirt late in the period on a free kick following a foul to sophomore Peter Alvarenga. Alvarenga tapped the ball to Keys who rifled one past Thomas Spenser in goal to put UMass ahead for good, 2-1, with 89 seconds remaining in the half. It was Keys' second of the year.
Sitton added an insurance goal just 81 tics into the second frame when he took a side header from Josh Schwartz and outraced Spenser to it in the box before flipping it across the line.
Freshman Nick Ruiz made five saves in goal, matching Spenser at the other end of the field for URI (2-8, 0-2).
UMass will have a split weekend coming up, playing at Fordham on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. before returning home to Rudd Field - where it has now won two straight - and face George Washington on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m.
