Minutemen Tops Bonnies in Record-Setting Day

AMHERST, Mass. - Seniors Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) and Yuri Morales (Santa Cruz, Calif.) both set school career marks as the UMass men's soccer team breezed to a 7-1 victory over St. Bonaventure on Sunday.
The win moves UMass' record to 9-4-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Minutemen are unbeaten in their last eight games, going 7-0-1 in that span. St. Bonaventure dropped to 6-7-0 overall and 1-5-0 in the A-10.
Deren wasted no time in tying the career goals scored mark as his first tally came at the 4:40 mark with assists from Ptah Myers (Columbus, Ohio) and Morales. Myers added a goal on an assist from Morales at the 27:14 mark for a 2-0 halftime lead.
Deren then scored his record-breaking 41st goal with a netter at the 47:53 mark with assists from Andrew Eicher (Billerica, Mass.) and Myers. Myers scored his second goal of the game just six minutes later on assists from Morales and Deren. The assist by Deren broke the school record for career points, and Morales' assist gave him a career record-tying 26th assist. Deren and Myers finished the afternoon with two goals and two assists each and Morales added a goal and three assists. Freshman Ernie Billittier (Mundelein, Ill.) and senior Jason Golesky (Trumbull, Conn.) added goals in the 76th and 77th minutes respectively. Deren would add an assist on Morales' goal in the 62nd minute that gave UMass a 5-0 lead. Deren finished the afternoon with 98 career points (41 g, 16 a). He has scored 36 points (15 g, 6 a) thus far this year, after scoring 38 points all of last year.
The Minutemen will hit the road next weekend with a trip to Philadelphia to battle Temple on Friday. On Sunday, UMass battles Saint Joseph's.
