No. 18/25 Charlotte Too Much For UMass In 4-0 Setback

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Owen Darby and Giuseppe Gentiule each scored twice for Charlotte as the 18th-ranked 49ers defeated Massachusetts, 4-0, at TransAmerica Field Friday.
UMass dropped to 4-7-2 overall and 1-3 in Atlantic 10 play, while Charlotte improved to 9-2-3 and 3-1-1.
Charlotte dented the scoreboard first when Darby put home a ball into the left of the goal. Isaac Caughran fed a ball into the right side of the penalty area where Will Mayhew pulled a cross away from the goal line to Darby for his first score of the season.
Darby doubled the 49ers' lead in the 71st minute with a goal on a similar play as the first.
Gentile got the first of his two scores at the 73:57 mark when he outjumped Brian Frame five yards in front of the goal and headed the ball home. He capped off the night for Charlotte with a goal in the final seconds when he outraced two Minutemen defenders and flipped the ball past backup goalkeeper Kellen Rauch.
Charlotte finished with 22 shots as half of those were put on goal. UMass managed two shots with one on goal.
UMass will travel to George Washington on Sunday, Oct. 21. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
