Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker To Dayton
Oct. 12, 2003
DAYTON, Ohio. - The 13th-ranked University of Massachusetts men's soccer team dropped its second Atlantic 10 Conference game, this time to 18th-ranked Dayton, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon. The Minutemen dropped to 7-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the A-10, while Dayton improved to 8-1-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the A-10.
The Minutemen got on the board first when Oral Bullen (Brooklyn, N.Y.) stayed persistent and rebounded his own miss and tipped in his fifth goal of the seaon just 10 minutes into the contest and a 1-0 lead. However, Dayton tied it at one on a Antti Arst goal at 15:58, then took a 2-1 lead just over five minutes later on a Mpoki Tenende netter.
But UMass rallied and tied the game at 2-2 in the 32nd minute on Ptah Myers' (Columbus, Ohio) sixth goal of the season. Myers received a pass from Dan Colwell (Spencer, Mass.) and perfectly placed a rocket from 30 yards out into the top right corner just past a diving Dayton keeper. But Dayton's George Nanchoff got the game-winner midway through the second half and the Minutemen were dealt their second straight defeat.
Dayton outshot the Minutemen, 11-10, and drew seven corner kicks to UMass' three. Colin Burns (Newark, Del.) made three saves in goal for UMass.
The Minutemen return home to the friendly confines of Rudd Field next weekend, by hosting La Salle at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, October 17, and Fordham at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 19.
