RICHMOND, Va. - VCU scored twice in the first 15 minutes and that proved to be enough as the Rams defeated Massachusetts, 4-0, in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams at Sports Backers Stadium on Friday night.

Josh Schwartz led the UMass (1-9-1, 0-1) attack with three shots as Jay Marchand added two off the bench. Nick Ruiz made three saves, matching his counterpart Andrew Wells.

UMass appeared to play with more confidence in the second half, outshooting VCU 7-6 in the period. The Minutemen had a number of strong scoring opportunities but were unable to capitalize.

VCU (5-4-1, 1-0) controlled possession for much of the opening period, getting goals from Kharlton Belmar at the 8:21 mark and Dennis Castillo at 19:11 to take a two-goal lead into the break.

The Rams added to their lead when Rahim Costa-Dorsey held off a Minutemen defender to the side of the goal and converted on the hard angle at 76:04. Ritchie Duffie ended the scoring with just under seven minutes to play as his shot form the top of the box found the back of the net.

UMass will play at George Mason on Sunday. Kickoff at the George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Va., is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
