Oct. 11, 2002
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The UMass men's soccer team earned its fifth straight win with a hard-fought 1-0 win over La Salle at rainy McCarthy Field. The win moves UMass' record to 7-4-0 overall, but more importantly, 3-0-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
The two teams battled to a defensive draw in the first half. The Minutemen managed only three shots in the first 45 minutes, but held La Salle to only four shots. UMass then started to turn on the heat in the second firing several shots on goal. Yuri Morales (Santa Cruz, Calif.) broke through the Explorer defense and found the top right corner at the 62:53 mark with an assist from Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.). UMass managed 13 shots in the second half, but were turned away by Explorers' goalie Stash Graham seven times in the game.
The UMass defense was equally as impressive, allowing only 11 La Salle shots and Enzo Altomare (Derby, Conn.) made two saves to post his third shutout in the last four games.
The Minutemen will look to win their sixth in a row on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game at Fordham.
