KINGSTON, R.I. -- The Massachusetts men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision at Rhode Island in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams at the URI Soccer Complex Saturday.

UMass moves to 3-5-2 on the year while URI is now 2-6-2.

The Rams opened the scoring in the 36th minute when Mike Casey punched home a rebound on Ross Morison's initial attempt.

That's the way things stood until the 70:00 mark when Thomas Lindroos scored on a cross following feeds from Alan Hernandez and Joey Haught.

Ten minutes later Matt Sykes and Casey executed a give-and-go that put the Rams ahead 3-0.

Senior defender Dominic Skrajewski recorded his first goal of the season when he converted a penalty kick for the Minutemen with nine seconds to play.

UMass finished with 16 shots and seven on goal, while URI had 18 and eight.

Will Ellis led the Minutemen with three shots in the contest. Brian Frame made five saves.

UMass will return to play next weekend when it plays host to Saint Joseph's and Temple. The Minutemen and Hawks will meet at Rudd Field on Friday at 3 p.m.
