Deren's Scoring Spree Ignites Minutemen
Oct. 6, 2002
AMHERST, Mass. - Senior forward Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) had a career day, scoring four goals in leading Massachusetts to a 5-2 win over Dayton at Rudd Field on Sunday.
The win moves UMass' record to 6-4-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Minutemen have won four games in a row, and won both games in a crucial weekend.
"This was a big weekend for us," said Head Coach Sam Koch. "You have to take care of business at home in the Atlantic 10 and we did that this weekend. This was an excellent start for us in the conference race."
The Minutemen got on the board early when senior Yuri Morales (Santa Cruz, Calif.) found a seam and scored top-shelf from just inside the penalty box at the 11:49 mark. The goal, Morales' fourth of the year, was assisted by Dan Colwell (Spencer, Mass.) and freshman Jason Scudamore (Shaker Heights, Ohio).
In what would become a reocurring theme, Deren netted his first goal of the game at the 16:47 mark on a cross from Morales that snuck just past a diving Dayton goaltender for a 2-0 lead. Deren would notch his second goal of the game, with assists from Morales and freshman Ernie Billittier (Mundelein, Ill.) at the 48:51 mark, on a header that deflected into the net off the goalie. His third goal came on an assist from Colwell at the 58:00 mark and his final tally came just 27 seconds later on a cross from sophomore Ptah Myers (Columbus, Ohio). It was the first career hat trick for Deren, the reigning A-10 Player of the Year, and he became one of only eight players in UMass history to score four goals in a game. He has scored a goal in four straight games.
Dayton answered with two goals late in the game to end UMass' shutout streak at 272:46. The Minutemen had shut out two consecutive opponents.
Massachusetts will take to the road next Friday with an A-10 contest at La Salle at 3:30 p.m, and then Sunday at Fordham at 1:00 p.m.
