Minutemen Use Strong Second Half to Stop Hartford, 6-0
Sept. 28, 2002
AMHERST, Mass. -- The UMass men's soccer team used five second-half goals to turn a close game into a runaway in a 6-0 win over regional rival Hartford on Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field.
The win evens UMass' record to 4-4-0, heading into next Friday's Atlantic 10 opener against Xavier at Rudd Field at 3:30 p.m.
"It's a lot more fun when you play the way we did," said UMass Head Coach Sam Koch. "We were fortunate in the beginning of the game as Hartford missed some chances, but we didn't allow much after that. We played an excellent second half and our defense played brilliant after the slow start."
UMass got on the board late in the first half when Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) scored on a breakaway with an assist from Yuri Morales (Santa Cruz, Calif.) at the 38:44 mark. The goal was Deren's fifth of the year.
The Minutemen then poured it on in the second half, scoring three goals in a six-minute span. Dan Colwell (Spencer, Mass.), Morales and Derek Rhodes (DePere, Wis.) all notched goals in the scoring spree. Oral Bullen (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Devlin Barnes (Bethesda, Md.) also scored late goals for the Minutemen. Colwell, Bullen, Barnes and Rhodes' goals were all their first of the year for the Minutemen, and eight different players scored. UMass has outscored their opponents, 10-1, in the last two games.
The Minutemen also got solid goalkeeping from senior Enzo Altomare (Derby, Conn.), who posted his first career shutout by making three saves.
