Syracuse Squeezes Out 2-0 Win Over UMass
Sept. 25, 2012
AMHERST, Mass. - Jordan Murrell scored in the 17th minute and Skylar Thomas added a second goal late in the contest as Syracuse defeated Massachusetts, 2-0, at Rudd Field Tuesday, handing the Minutemen their first home loss of the season.
UMass dropped to 3-4-2 on the year while Syracuse improved to 8-2.
Murrell found himself alone in space just outside the penalty box when he fired a shot in the lower right corner of the goal, giving the Orange the lead at 16:24.
UMass nearly added the equalizer 20 minutes into the second half but Matt Keys' header from approximately 10 yards out sailed just over the crossbar.
The Orange put an insurance goal on the board at 75:49 when Skylar Thomas collected his initial header off the right post and slipped it past UMass' Brian Frame.
Syracuse held the advantage in shots, 16-4, and took all ten corner kicks in the contest.
Frame finished with six saves in goal.
The game was UMass' final regular-season non-conference outing of the season. The squad will play an exhibition match at Montreal on Sept. 30 before opening Atlantic 10 action at Rhode Island on Oct. 6.
