Sept. 21, 2002
ORONO, Maine -- The UMass men's soccer team scored two goals in each period and stopped a two-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over Maine on Saturday afternoon. The Minutemen improved to 3-4-0 with the win and Maine dropped to 1-3-2 with the loss.
UMass got on the board early when freshman Jason Scudamore (Shaker Heights, Ohio) scored his first collegiate goal with a 30-yard blast to give the Minutemen a 1-0 lead at the 5:27 mark of the first half. UMass added to the lead when Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) scored his fourth goal of the year at the 32:24 mark with a penalty kick. It was UMass' first penalty kick of the year.
The second half was much of the same as UMass added two more goals. The Minutemen got an own goal at the 68:00 mark. Maine narrowed the gap to 3-1 moments later at the 70:35 mark, but UMass stopped any Maine rally with a Yuri Morales (Santa Cruz, Calif.) goal at the 73:26 mark for a 4-1 cushion, which was the final score.
Dave Doucette (Middleton, Mass.) got his first career win for UMass in the nets. Doucette recorded three saves in his first career game to gain the win.
