AMHERST, Mass. - Fairfield scored a pair of second-half goals to defeat Massachusetts, 2-0, at Rudd Field Wednesday.

Coming out of a scoreless first period in which the Minutemen held an 11-7 edge in shots, Fairfield's Reco McLaren took a pass from Daniel Shaw on a turnover and scored his first goal of the season three minutes into the second half.

Fairfield (2-1-1) added it's second goal in the 80th minute when McLaren fed Martin Lindgren whose shot from 10 yards out slipped into the far side of the goal.

UMass (0-6-1) came out as the aggressor in the first 20 minutes, posting five shots and forcing Fairfield goalkeeper Joe Martin into two saves while adding a team save on a Josh Schwartz shot from in the box.Martin finished with five saves on the day.

On the game, UMass outshot Fairfield 19-15. Peter Alvarenga, Josh Jess and Schwartz had three shots apiece.

Nick Ruiz made seven stops in net for the Minutemen.

UMass will return to action on Sunday when it travels to Harvard for a Noon contest at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium in Cambridge, Mass.
