Men's Soccer Picks Up 4-2 Win Over Siena To Open UMass Classic
Sept. 17, 2004
AMHERST, Mass. - Junior Oral Bullen (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored twice for UMass as the Minuteman men's soccer team earned a 4-2 victory over the Siena Saints at Rudd Field in the opening match of the UMass Classic.
The win was the second consecutive for UMass who improved to 2-3-0 on the season, while Siena fell to 0-4-1.
Bullen opened the scoring with a shot from 15-yards out after receiving a cross from sophomore Rob Charest (Monson, Mass.) in the fourth minute of the game.
Siena tied the game in the 45th minute as T.J. Helly collected Thomas Bianco's rebound off the post and drove it passed UMass keeper Colin Burns (Newark, Del.).
The Minutemen answered just before the halftime break with a goal from freshman Mike Mingione (New Fairfield, Conn.) giving UMass the 2-1 lead.
Bullen found the net again in the second half scoring in the 62nd minute placing a shot from six-yards out over a diving Patrick Henry for Siena. Burns boomed a 60-yard free kick to start the play with freshman Matty LeMire (Ipswich, Mass.) giving the touch pass to Bullen for the goal. Burns was credited with an assist - the first of his career.
Tom Santoro kept Siena close with a goal in the 66th minute to bring the Saints within a goal, 3-2.
Sophomore Richie Higa (Honolulu, Hawaii) sealed the win for UMass with a 40-yard chipper over Henry in the 89th minute.
"We did it the hard way today," said head coach Sam Koch. "We have to play better defensively. I thought we came out hard, but we gave them too much time and space. We corrected that in the last 12 minutes of the game playing well and showing good control to close the match."
UMass returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 19 when the Minutemen host Harvard at Noon at Rudd Field. Siena will face Hartford, who lost to Harvard in the second game of the Classic, on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
