UMass Survives Challenge From Iona, 4-3
Sept. 13, 2002
AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore Martin Burwell's (Virginia Beach, Va.) goal at the 82:55 mark gave the UMass men's soccer team a hard-fought 4-3 win over Iona College in Friday's action in the UMass Soccer Classic. The win evens UMass' record to 2-2-0 on the season.
The Minutemen struggled defensively with the Gaels, but found enough offense to get the win. UMass took a 1-0 lead at the 17:38 mark of the first half on senior Jeff Deren's (Chicopee, Mass.) third goal of the year, with an assist from Yuri Morales (Santa Cruz, Calif.). Morales then notched his first goal of the year with an assist from Ernie Billittier (Mundelein, Ill.) at the 42:03 mark to push the lead to 2-0.
However, Iona answered on a Giovanni Treglia goal just 44 seconds later to narrow the margin to 2-1, which was the halftime score.
UMass came out strong in the second half, taking their second two-goal lead of the game at the 48:35 mark on Ptah Myers' (Columbus, Ohio) second goal of the year, with an assist by Deren, to increase the cushion to 3-1.
Once again, Iona battled back, trimming the margin to 3-2 just 19 seconds later on a netter by Abdullah Begail, before getting the tying goal at 67:31 on a score by David Kinneman.
But UMass responded with a strong offensive attack in the game's final 15 minutes. On UMass' first corner kick of the game, Burwell launched a ball into a crowd that got deflected into the net by Iona's goalkeeper for Burwell's first goal of the year. The Minutemen defense then stiffened and hung on for a 4-3 victory.
"We didn't play great today, but the important thing is we got the win," said UMass Assistant Coach Dean Smith. "We didn't get down when they tied it at 3-3, and we made some plays down the stretch. We found a way to win."
The Minutemen will host Michigan State on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Spartans topped Hartford, 3-0, in the opener.
