Match At Fairfield Ends In 0-0 Draw For Men's Soccer
Sept. 11, 2010
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The UMass men's soccer earned its second draw of the season, 0-0 at Fairfield on Saturday afternoon. Unbeaten on the road in 2010, the Minutemen move their record to 0-1-2, while the Stags are now 1-1-2 on the year.
The teams were nearly level in every statistical category, with Fairfield holding a slight edge in shots, 9-8, and corners, 6-5, though UMass placed more shots on target, by a 4-2 margin.
After beginning the contest without an attempt at goal in the opening period, the Minutemen had an offensive flurry in the second, beginning with a shot wide by Ben Arikian in the 56th minute. Chris Gilbert nearly put UMass on the board at the 57:31 mark, but sent his strike off the crossbar. Seconds later, Arikian landed a shot on target that was turned aside by Michael O'Keefe.
Chris Roswess and Bryant Craft had opportunities in the overtime period, but were both denied by O'Keefe who finished with four saves in his first shutout of the season. Chris Piekos came up with two stops in net for the Minutemen, recording the fifth shutout of his career.
UMass will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 17, when the squad will play host to UCF at 3:30 p.m. The match kicks off an eight-game homestand for the Minutemen.
