GARDEN CITY, N.Y. -- Adelphi forward James Diana's header in the 108th minute proved to be the difference as the Panthers upended Massachusetts 1-0 in double overtime at Motamed Field Saturday.

The loss was the first of the season for UMass (2-1-1) who outshot the home club 14-12. Adelphi (1-4-0) earned its first win of the year.

UMass had some good scoring opportunities, with its first coming in the 15th minute when Connor DeVivo found himself one on one with Ahmad Salamah, but was stopped by the Panther goalie.

In the second half, an Adelphi yellow card resulted in a free kick from just outside the box for UMass, but Matt Keys' attempt was just off the mark, wide left.

Adelphi's Adam Weinzimer nearly broke the deadlock in the 77th minute when he picked up a loose ball in front of the UMass net and blasted a shot point blank, but Brian Frame was there to meet him, keeping it a 0-0 affair.

After 90 minutes of play, either side could not find the back of the net. However, seven minutes into the second overtime, Steve Rivera sent a long cross from the far right side to connect with Diana who headed the ball in at 107:04, giving Adelphi the 1-0 win.

The physical match saw 26 fouls called with five yellow and two red cards awarded.

Frame and Salamah made four saves apiece.

DeVivo, Nigel Negm and Josh Schwartz led the Minutemen with three shots each.

UMass will return to action on Wednesday night when it travels to Hartford for a 7 p.m. contest at Yousuf Al-Marzook Field.
